App caches

Apps keep temporary copies of things they’ve already downloaded or built, so they open faster next time. Over months, these caches can grow to many gigabytes.

Where they live

Most app caches are in the Caches folder inside your Library:

~/Library/Caches

Is it safe to delete them?

For apps that aren’t running, yes. A cache is a copy, not the original, and the app rebuilds what it needs the next time it opens. The first launch afterwards can be a little slower.

Deleting the cache of an app that’s open can confuse it, so quit the app first.

How Roomy handles them

  • Skips apps that are currently open
  • Leaves macOS’s own caches alone
  • Removes the rest during the daily tidy-up when Autopilot is on
