iPhone and iPad backups

When you back up an iPhone or iPad to your Mac, the whole backup stays on your disk. Old ones from devices you no longer use are easy to forget.

Where they live

~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

Before you delete one

Make sure you have a newer backup, either in iCloud or a more recent one on your Mac. A backup you delete can’t be recovered.

How to remove them

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad, or open Finder with it nearby.
  2. Select the device in the Finder sidebar.
  3. In the General tab, click Manage Backups.
  4. Select the old backup and click Delete Backup.

How Roomy handles them

Roomy never deletes backups on its own. When it finds them, it lists them under “Review first” with their size, so you can decide.
