How to clear cache on a Mac

Caches help apps load faster, but they grow without limit. Clearing them is safe if you know where to look and what to leave alone.

Updated

Clear app caches

  1. Quit the apps whose caches you want to clear.
  2. In Finder, choose Go, Go to Folder, and enter the path below.
  3. Open a folder named after an app and move its contents to the Trash.
  4. Empty the Trash, then restart your Mac.
~/Library/Caches

Clear browser caches

  • Safari: Settings, Advanced, turn on “Show features for web developers”, then Develop, Empty Caches
  • Chrome: Settings, Privacy and security, Delete browsing data, Cached images and files
  • Firefox: Settings, Privacy & Security, Cookies and Site Data, Clear Data

What not to touch

Leave /System and the main /Library folder alone, and don’t delete folders that start with com.apple unless you know what they are. Clearing caches won’t fix every problem, and the space slowly fills again.

Let it happen on its own

Roomy clears the caches of apps that aren’t open every day, skips anything belonging to macOS, and keeps a history of what it removed.
